Meiling, “With this story, is there any challenges to create such a story to avoid hitting the big wave of stereotype as an African American family?”
Trey, “Yes, in terms of just challenges to avoid it and watch out for navigate? Yes, a lot, I don’t know where to begin, it was a tough movie to make. It has been brewing for a very long time, and they all just click into place with these lovely human-beings. Yeah, it was hard, but amazing, it was the best summer of my life personally.”
Meiling, “So with Kelvin, so initially when the movie first got introduced, you are the first person came to Trey’s mind, so how do you feel about that?”
Kelvin, “I was just so grateful, working with one of my best friends, and all the incredible film maker at the same time, you just never get this type of opportunity as a young African American actor. So be able to work with Trey, and suddenly be able to work with Sterling K. Brown, Renee Goldsberry and with this beautiful girl right here, it’s just a blessing.”

Meiling, “So with beautiful Taylor right here, so what initially attracted you to Waves?”
Taylor, “The biggest thing is that you don’t get characters like this for young woman come along ever. So when I read it, and saw multi-faceted, and nuanced, for an upper class Black American family, it was just so unique, and haven’t told before, so that really intrigued me, and the script is just beautiful. Trey is so talented. I have never seen anything like ‘Krisha’ which is his first film, there was nothing that made me not want to do it. I would be very lucky to be a part of it if I could.”

Meiling, “Very nice. So, there was a rumor spread. Initially it was supposed to be a musical, so how did that come about?”
Kelvin:”It was me, I really wanted some songs to the movie, and I thought if I would put it out there, Trey would write something for me. ”
Meiling, “Can you sing a little?”
Kelvin, “hmmm, just kidding!”
Meiling, “Just one last question, just use one simple emoji to describe your character in this film, what would that be?”
Kelvin, “Let’s say the moon emoji.”
Taylor, “I was going to say that.” Kelvin, “Really?”
Taylor, “The moon emoji for both of us, the one where that half of the moon. I like that black and yellow moon together. They look at each other, and they are beautiful.”
Meiling, “One last one. What type of message would you like to send to the audience?”
Trey, “I hope people get to the other side of the film, and feel some empathy and humanity for these characters, and feel some hope. And honestly, something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is, ‘communication.’ The communication between families, the communication between parents and their children, and children to their parents.”
